Frequently Asked Questions

When will the application open?

Our application is currently open! Click “Apply for Relief” to access our application in English and Spanish.

Can I apply if I already received a grant?

Applications are given to people who have not received a grant within the past 24 months.

How is it decided who gets the money?

Our board and a small team of trained volunteers assess the applications and disperse grants as the fund allows. The current qualifications for applying for the fund are simply that an applicant must have worked as a nanny within the past year, must reside in the US or territories, and must be able to prove financial hardship due to COVID-19.

I applied; now what?

You will be contacted via email to let you know if your grant was approved or denied. Applicants that are denied at this time will be encouraged to reapply on our next open application time period.

I’m not a nanny, but I am a domestic worker. Can I apply?

We decided to keep our fund exclusive to nannies since they are our community (the fund was started by a nanny to help other nannies!) There are 1.1 million nannies in the United States alone, so we wanted to keep our range as limited within that as possible. There are many other relief funds set up for domestic workers, including through the NDWA.

Can I apply if I have been paid in cash or under the table?

Yes, as long as you are able to provide some documentation of income and of working as a nanny within the last year.

Will I need to provide my Social Security Number to apply?

No, you do not need to provide your Social Security Number.

Is this considered taxable income?

Reporting requirements and taxation may differ between individuals and their specific situations. We strongly recommend checking in with a tax professional, e.g. a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), tax lawyer, or tax preparation service, for guidance on how to report a receipt of grant funds when filing taxes.

Is the grant application (my info) confidential?

Yes. The security of your information and confidentiality is one of our our utmost priorities.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Not yet. We have applied for 501(c)3 status but the IRS let us know to expect about a one year delay on our status being approved because of their current backlog - so donations are not currently tax-deductible. We encourage donors to consult their tax preparers to determine future eligibility.

What papers will I need to collect for application?

You will need to provide for us:

  • Your name and mailing address, a phone number and email address

  • Some proof of being a nanny (at least one of following)- this can include but is not limited to a resume, contract, social media links or screenshots, certificate from nanny training courses, membership information from nanny organization, personal reference, agency reference, texts/emails that show scheduling or other work related conversations, or other verifiable information in the form of pdf files or screen shots. NOTE: photos of children will not be accepted.

  • Some proof of income for some period in the last 6 months (at least one of following) - this can include but is not limited to a w-2 or 1099 form, 2018 or 2019 tax return, copies of bank statements, letter from nanny employer, severance letter, screenshots of venmo/cash app or other payments, pay stubs  or other verifiable information in the form of pdf files or screen shots.

  • Some proof of financial distress due to COVID 19 (one or more of the following)- overdue bills, copies of bank statements, copies of applications for unemployment or other aid, notice of late rent or eviction notice, loan applications, listing of medical expenses, or other verifiable information in the form of pdf files or screen shots.

  • Information will be uploaded to the application by providing screenshots, pdf files, gif or jpeg images.

Will I need to pay this back?

No, this is a grant and the money disbursed is yours to use for housing costs, car payments or transportation costs, utility bills, child care, groceries and medical bills.

We do encourage recipients to consider paying it forward by donating to the Nanny Relief Fund if and when they are in a position to do so.

Will receiving a grant affect my unemployment benefits?

As different states and cities have different guidelines on this, we recommend consulting with your local unemployment office or case worker for a definitive answer.

I live outside of the US - can I apply?

Unfortunately at this time grants can only be made to residents of the U.S, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and other U.S. Territories.

What can funds be used for?

We expect funds should be used for basic necessities such as rent, food, transportation costs, utility costs, child care or medical care.
